Project Overview
Canna Green Packaging (CGP) and [Re] Waste came together with a shared mission: to create a truly circular solution for the cannabis industry. CGP, a leading Alberta-based manufacturer of cannabis packaging, is committed to Responsible Manufacturing Practices, while [Re] Waste operates Canada’s largest cannabis recycling programs.
Our collaboration began with a simple but powerful idea: could we use post-consumer cannabis packaging collected through [Re] Waste’s recycling programs as the raw material to manufacture new cannabis packaging?
The result was the development of Circular Packaging—a closed-loop solution where packaging waste is collected, processed, and remanufactured into new, compliant, and sustainable cannabis containers.
The Challenge
The cannabis industry faces significant barriers to sustainable packaging:
- Excess packaging waste due to compliance regulations
- Lack of infrastructure for recycling cannabis containers
- Overreliance on virgin plastics and single-use formats
- A need for brand-aligned, sustainable packaging alternatives
Our Solution
Together, CGP and [Re] Waste developed a system that:
✔ Collects post-consumer packaging through [Re] Waste’s EcoBin network and LP partnerships
✔ Sorts and processes the material to ensure quality and consistency for manufacturing
✔ Delivers clean feedstock to Canna Green Packaging, who manufactures new, circular cannabis containers
✔ Creates custom-branded packaging solutions for LPs and retailers looking to meet ESG goals and reduce landfill waste
This partnership not only reduces environmental impact—it also provides a traceable, locally sourced, and responsible alternative to traditional cannabis packaging.
The Results & Environmental Impact
✔ Enabled closed-loop production of cannabis packaging using real post-consumer materials
✔ Supported local circular economy infrastructure entirely within Alberta
✔ Offered LPs and retailers a sustainable packaging option that reflects their brand values and ESG goals
✔ Demonstrated how partnerships between recyclers and manufacturers can drive real innovation in waste reduction
Looking Ahead
The success of the Circular Packaging initiative proves that sustainable cannabis packaging is not only possible—but scalable. As interest from Licensed Producers and retailers grows, [Re] Waste and CGP continue to scale production and evolve packaging options that are innovative, compliant, and low-impact.
