Project Overview
The QUAD 8 Community Clean-Up was a grassroots initiative launched by The Pot Shack, a valued cannabis retail partner in [Re] Waste’s recycling program. The vision was to bring together eight cannabis retailers located along 8th Street in Saskatoon, on August 8 (8/8), to take collective action in their community.
With a focus on environmental impact and breaking stigma, the clean-up was a chance for cannabis businesses to step outside their stores and into their neighborhoods—showing that the industry is rooted in responsibility, community care, and sustainability.
The Challenge
Cannabis businesses often face public stigma and skepticism around their social impact. The industry needed an opportunity to:
- Demonstrate environmental responsibility beyond packaging recycling
- Engage directly with the local community in a positive and visible way
- Show that cannabis retailers are part of the solution, not the problem
Our Solution
The Pot Shack and [Re] Waste led the initiative and invited fellow cannabis retailers on 8th Street to join in.
✔ Collaborative Industry Engagement – All 8 cannabis retailers along 8th Street participated in the event
✔ Community-Based Impact – Teams went out to clean parking lots, sidewalks, and surrounding areas
✔ Content Creation – A videographer captured the event, featuring retailer interviews and action shots to help share the story
✔ Positive Representation – The footage highlighted the human side of the industry—owners, employees, and community members working together to clean up the environment
The Results & Environmental Impact
✔ Cleaned up shared community spaces across 8 major cannabis retail locations
✔ Removed waste from parking lots, boulevards, sidewalks, and surrounding areas
✔ Highlighted the cannabis industry's leadership in sustainability and social engagement
✔ Created video content to document and inspire similar initiatives across Canada
Looking Ahead
The success of QUAD 8 has opened the door to repeat clean-up events, cross-country cannabis retailer collaborations, and a broader push to show that the industry is committed to positive community involvement.
[Re] Waste plans to continue supporting and promoting events like these to expand impact beyond packaging—and into people and place.
Partner Testimonial
"This event showed the community who we really are. We’re not just retailers—we care about our neighborhoods, our impact, and doing our part. It was powerful to stand together with our peers and show that cannabis businesses are here to help."
